Yes... Desiree, what you say makes perfect since about rap and the violence and stereotyping within it. I remember my geography teacher explaining something that made so much sense about the african american society in america.... why they have felt compelled to have that image of 'violence and money' Because for so long the white people impressed upon them a self image that they were ignorant... the word 'niggardly' means slow/lazy. That they were no good... and I can't even begin to imagine the long-term psychological effect it would have on a person to know that their ansestors were slaves. Their angst is completely justified. Being a white girl who grew up in a middle school with 1 black kid I was afraid when I first moved to California. MAJOR culture shock but in that mixture of ethnicities and cultures we all had to learn to appreciate each other or there would be endless violence so generally speaking we did learn to emphasize the good rather than to build from the negative stereotypes of one another... and again, now that I'm back in Kentucky things are different again and in Cincinnati near my hometown racial hate crimes reign. To be honest - I just try to forget about race/gender/financial position and judge a person by their actions. :-) its easy when you're a clouded thinker to begin with.
